Honoring the K-9s that served at Heceta Head

Sunday, March 12th – National K9 Veterans Day at Heceta Head Lightstation,
11 AM to 2 PM.

Each year March 13th is set aside to honor the service and sacrifices of American military
working dogs. Join us at Heceta Head Lightstation on Sunday, March 12th from 11:00-
2:00 while we celebrate K-9s who have served. Senior Trooper Josh Wolcott and F&W
Conservation K-9 Buck will provide a demo and meet & greet. Meet some adoptable dogs
from the Oregon Coast Humane Society, take a guided tour of the Keepers House, Visit
with State Park Volunteers in the Lighthouse and learn all about natural features in area
from our Roving Rangers. Free cookies, and free treats for your K-9! The celebration will
take place at the Keepers House near the site of the WW II K9 kennels – along the scenic
walking trail that leads from the beach to the lighthouse tower.
The Coast Guard Beach Patrol was formed in 1942 in response to German sabotage
attempts in New York and Florida and the Japanese submarine bombardment of
California and Fort Stevens, Oregon. From early 1943 to July 1944, Heceta Head served
as a Beach Patrol station for the Coast Guard Dogs for Defense program.
